As its name suggests, Caribbean stud poker spread from the Caribbean island of Aruba. It is built on old-fashioned five-card stud, where some cards are dealt face up, reshaped into a one-on-one contest with the dealer to make a casino table game.
"I thought of it first"
There are several stories about where the game came from. The best known is the claim of David Sklansky, the famous poker theorist, who says he devised it in 1982 under the name "Casino Poker". His version differed a little from today's, for example in showing two of the dealer's cards.
Sklansky says he was unable to patent the game. A poker player who heard about it later took it to Aruba, where he and a casino owner adjusted the rules and patented it, or so Sklansky tells it.
An Aruba casino and the cruise ships
The casino usually named is the King International on Aruba's Palm Beach, later the Excelsior Casino. It sat at a favourite stop for Caribbean cruise ships, and one story has its owner discovering the game being played on board a ship.
Popular with tourists, the game spread with the cruise ships to the other islands of the Caribbean and then to casinos in the United States.
A dollar for a dream
What made Caribbean stud a hit was its progressive jackpot. Part of each $1 side bet went into a pot, and whoever was dealt a royal flush took the lot. A jackpot meter climbing above the table was something table games had never had before.
Bringing a slot machine's dream of instant riches to the table, the idea went on to be copied by many other table games.
A story of rights
The rights to Caribbean stud passed through several hands, including companies making jackpot equipment, and now belong to a company descended from Shuffle Master. In the late 1990s, the owners of the time sued Three Card Poker for patent infringement, and that case is what led to Three Card Poker's rights passing to Shuffle Master (see Three Card Poker Tales).
Caribbean stud in numbers
Five cards make a royal flush once in 649,740 hands.
Five cards make a pair or better about 49.9% of the time, almost every other hand.
The dealer qualifies (ace-king or better) about 56.3% of the time; ace-king high alone accounts for about 6.4%.
Of the dealer's five cards you see only one, and it is your only clue.
