Basic strategy is a chart of the play that loses least in the long run for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up card. It was built by comparing the expected value of hitting, standing, doubling, splitting and surrendering over millions of simulated hands.
Following it exactly brings the house edge at a typical six-deck, stand-on-soft-17 table down to roughly 0.3–0.5%. Card counting is built on top of this foundation, so learning the chart perfectly comes first.
Only two things matter
Basic strategy looks at your hand and the dealer's up card, nothing else. Your last result, other players' hands, hunches and streaks play no part.
The strategy chart
Rows are your hand; columns are the dealer's up card. Switch the rules below and the chart changes to match. Turn on "Adjust to the count" and move the slider to light up the cells that change with the true count (explained under "Count-adjusted strategy").
Codes: H = hit, S = stand, D = double (else hit), Ds = double (else stand), P = split, R = surrender (else hit), Rs = surrender (else stand), Rp = surrender (else split). With three or more cards you can no longer double or surrender, so take the play in brackets.
Learning it as rules
Rather than memorising the grid cell by cell, learn it as a handful of rules (standard rules: 6–8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split, late surrender).
Hard hands
Always hit 8 or less; always stand on 17 or more
9: double against 3–6, otherwise hit
10: double against 2–9. 11: double against everything except an ace
12: stand against 4–6, otherwise hit
13–16: stand against 2–6, hit against 7 or higher
Soft hands
A,2 and A,3 double against 5–6; A,4 and A,5 against 4–6; A,6 against 3–6. Otherwise hit
A,7: double against 3–6, stand against 2, 7 and 8, hit against 9, 10 and ace
A,8 and A,9: always stand
Pairs
Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives (play 5,5 as a 10)
2,2, 3,3 and 7,7: split against 2–7
6,6: split against 2–6. 4,4: split against 5–6
9,9: split against 2–6, 8 and 9; stand against 7, 10 and ace
Surrender and insurance
Surrender hard 16 against 9, 10 and ace, and hard 15 against 10
Never take insurance or even money
If the dealer hits soft 17
Also double 11 against an ace, A,7 against 2 and A,8 against 6, and surrender 15, 17 and 8,8 against an ace. Set "Dealer's soft 17" to Hit in the chart above to see it.
Why the strategy looks like this
You can use the chart by rote, but knowing the reasons makes it stick and helps at tables with different rules. Four ideas carry most of the weight.
1. The dealer has no choice
The dealer must draw to 16. With a 2 to 6 showing, the dealer often ends up with a weak 12–16 and busts while drawing. With 7 to ace showing, the dealer tends to reach 17 or more.
When the dealer shows 4, 5 or 6, more than four times in ten the dealer busts. Even with a weak hand, you gain by standing and letting the dealer break.
2. Assume a ten in the hole
Ten-value cards make up about 31% of the deck, more than any other value. Think of a dealer 7 as 17 and a dealer 6 as 16, and the shape of the chart appears: against a 7 you need 17 or more yourself; against a 6 you need not take risks.
3. Compare with your own bust risk
Here is roughly how often one more card busts a hard hand (taking ten-value cards as about 31%).
Your hand
Bust chance
Cards that bust you
Hard 12
about 31%
ten-value cards
Hard 13
about 38%
9 or higher
Hard 14
about 46%
8 or higher
Hard 15
about 54%
7 or higher
Hard 16
about 62%
6 or higher
Hitting 16 against a 6 busts you over 60% of the time, while the dealer busts on their own more than 40% of the time: stand. Against a 10, the dealer makes 17 or better close to 80% of the time, so standing on 16 nearly always loses. Hitting busts you 60% of the time, yet still loses slightly less: hit (and surrendering loses less still). You hit 12 against 2 or 3 because your bust risk (about 31%) is still low, while the dealer's (35–38%) is not high enough to wait for.
4. Bet more when ahead, fold when far behind
Doubling: 10 and 11 often become strong hands with one card, and the weaker the dealer, the better your chances. Doubling means putting more money out when you are likely to win. Soft doubles combine a hand that cannot bust on one card with a weak dealer.
Splitting: 8,8 makes 16, the worst total, but two hands starting from 8 are each about average. A,A turns a weak 12 into two strong hands starting from 11. Tens already make 20, so keep them together; 5,5 is far better doubled as 10.
Surrender: when a hand wins less than 25% of the time, giving up half the bet loses less than playing on. 16 against 10 and 15 against 10 are the classic cases.
Insurance: it pays 2 to 1, so it only profits if the hole card is a ten more than one time in three. In practice that chance is about 31%, so in the long run you lose 7–8% of what you put on it. Your own blackjack changes nothing; even money is the same bet.
Judge the decision, not the result
You will hit 16 against 10 and bust plenty of times. Played thousands of times, the chart's choice still loses least. Not letting single results sway you is the real skill.
Common mistakes
Never busting: never hitting 12 or more costs a lot against a dealer 7 or higher.
Mimicking the dealer: hitting to 17 gives up the gains from doubling and splitting while still taking the bust risk.
Splitting tens: breaks up a 20 into two below-average hands (with a rare exception at high counts).
Insuring a good hand: the value of insurance has nothing to do with your own hand.
Just standing on A,7: soft 18 is a losing hand against 9, 10 and ace, and hitting it cannot bust.
Not doubling 11 against 10: a ten makes 21, and even without one you have plenty of chances. Double.
Count-adjusted strategy
Basic strategy assumes the remaining cards are an average mix. Once counting tells you how the shoe is skewed, a different play is better in some spots. These are index plays.
Why the right play changes
A positive true count means the remaining shoe is rich in tens and aces. The dealer's stiff hands bust more often, your doubles land strong cards more often, and the dealer's hole card is more likely to be a ten. So you stand, double, split and insure more. With a negative count it works the other way: hitting busts you less, so you hit more.
Reading an index
Each play has an index; when the true count is at or above it, you depart from the chart. The index for 15 against 10 is +4: stand at +4 or higher, otherwise hit. This site rounds the true count down (+2.7 is +2, −0.5 is −1).

When surrender is available (on your first two cards), the surrender decision comes first. The stand indices for 16 and 15 against 10 apply when you can't surrender: with three or more cards, or at a table without surrender.
What to learn first
Insurance (+3): it comes up every time an ace shows and is worth the most
16 vs 10 (0) and 15 vs 10 (+4): you meet them constantly
12 vs 2 and 3, 11 vs A, 10 vs 10, 9 vs 2: the positive-count doubles and stands
The negative side (12 vs 4–6, 13 vs 2–3): hitting when the count drops
Splitting tens: the most conspicuous play, so many counters skip it when they are being watched
Practising on this site
In "Decision record" below the table, score against "Basic strategy" and play until you reach 100%.
Check doubtful hands in the "Basic strategy chart"; on your turn the matching cell lights up.
When you're comfortable, turn on "Adjust strategy to the count" and look at the cells that change.
Finally switch the scoring to "Count-adjusted", keep the true count yourself, and see whether you get the index plays right too.
A,2와 A,3은 5~6에 더블, A,4와 A,5는 4~6에 더블, A,6은 3~6에 더블.
A,8과 A,9는 항상 스탠드
페어
A,A와 8,8은 반드시 스플릿.
11은 A에도 더블, A,7은 2에도 더블, A,8은 6에 더블.
