In blackjack, dealt cards go into the discard tray and stay out of play until the next shuffle. If you keep track of what has already come out, you know whether the cards still in the shoe favour you or the dealer. That is card counting.
You do not memorise every card. Each card gets a value such as +1, 0 or −1, and you keep a single running total in your head.
Why the remaining cards change your edge
Lots of tens and aces help you: blackjacks become more likely and only the player's blackjack pays 3:2. Doubled hands get stronger, the dealer's 12–16 bust more often, and insurance can even become a good bet.
Lots of 2–6 help the dealer: the dealer must draw on 16 or less, so small cards rescue stiff hands.
By betting more only when the count says the shoe is rich in high cards, and waiting at the minimum otherwise, you turn a game that is slightly against you on average into one with a long-run edge.
The Hi-Lo count
This game uses Hi-Lo, the most widely used counting system.

When a small card (good for the dealer) leaves, the rest of the shoe gets better, so you add one. When a big card (good for you) leaves, the shoe gets worse, so you subtract one. A full deck sums to exactly zero, which makes Hi-Lo a balanced count: you start from 0 after every shuffle.
The running count
The total of every card seen since the shuffle is the running count. If these eight cards come out:
K♠5♥3♣9♦A♠6♥2♣10♦
−1 +1 +1 +0 −1 +1 +1 −1 gives a running count of +1. The dealer's hole card and burn cards are not counted until you actually see them.
The true count
A running count of +6 means a lot with one deck left and much less with five decks left, because the surplus of high cards is spread thinner. So you divide the running count by the number of decks remaining; the result is the true count, and that is what your decisions are based on.
True count = running count ÷ decks remaining
Example: running count +6 with 3 decks left → +2. Running count −5 with 2 decks left → −2.5 (this site floors it to −3).
At a real table you estimate the decks remaining from the height of the discard tray. In a six-deck shoe, two decks in the tray means about four left. Estimating to the nearest half deck is plenty. On this site's table, the discard tray at the top left grows as the shoe is dealt.
Count, edge and bet ramp
With Hi-Lo, each point of true count is worth roughly 0.5% to the player. Standard six-deck rules start around −0.4%, so a good rule of thumb is break-even near true count +1 and an edge from +2 up.
The "bet guide" in this site's counting panel uses this simple ramp (1 unit = the table minimum):
True count
+1 or less
+2
+3
+4
+5 or more
Bet
1 unit
2 units
4 units
6 units
8 units
Even with the count in your favour the edge is only one or two percent, and short-term results swing wildly. Without a bankroll many times your top bet, running out of money while holding an edge is common. Feel those swings here before you try it in a real casino.
Ace side count
Hi-Lo counts the ace as −1 just like a ten, but the ace is special: it is the card that makes blackjacks. A side count tracks how many aces have been played, separately from the main count.
A six-deck shoe has 24 aces; on average, four per remaining deck are still to come
More aces left than average is a reason to bet a little more; fewer, a little less
The side count is normally used to adjust bets, not playing decisions such as hit or stand
The counting panel on this site shows aces seen, aces left and the difference from average. Add it only once your Hi-Lo count is reliable.
Practice drills
Running count drill
Cards appear one at a time. Count them with Hi-Lo and enter the running count at the end. Choose 52 cards to see a full deck: if you counted correctly, the answer is always 0.
True count drill
Convert the running count and decks remaining into a true count, rounded down.
Counting faster and cleaner
Cancel pairs: a K and a 5 are −1 and +1, so together they are zero and can be skipped.
Count hands, not cards: read a player's hand as one block (10 and 6 → 0) instead of card by card.
Deck countdown: turn over a deck one card at a time and check you finish on 0. Aim for under 30 seconds. Removing one card first and identifying it from the final count is a great variation.
Practise with noise: if you cannot keep the count through conversation, music and movement, it will break in a casino.
Watch your face: moving lips or repeated glances at the discard tray stand out.
Stop when tired: several short sessions are more accurate than one long one.
Other counting systems
Many systems assign different values. Finer values are more accurate in theory but harder to keep at table speed. In the table, BC, PE and IC measure the accuracy of betting, playing and insurance decisions (closer to 1.00 is better).

KO (Knock-Out): also counts the 7 as +1, so a deck does not sum to zero — an unbalanced count. You start from a negative number based on the deck count and never need to divide into a true count.
Red Seven: an unbalanced count where only red sevens are +1. A natural option for Hi-Lo players who want to skip the division.
Hi-Opt I / II, Omega II: count the ace as 0 to improve playing accuracy, and rely on an ace side count to recover betting accuracy.
Zen Count: a level-2 count that keeps the ace at −1, so no side count is needed. A popular next step after Hi-Lo.
Wong Halves: half-point values give some of the best betting accuracy, at the cost of being the hardest to keep.
A simple count kept quickly and accurately often earns more than a complex count kept slowly. Mastering Hi-Lo first is the shortest path.
Choosing a table
Rules: 3:2 blackjack is a must. Prefer dealer stands on soft 17, double after split and surrender (see House Rules).
Number of decks: fewer decks make the count swing further, creating more favourable situations.
Penetration: the single most important condition for counting. Dealing five of six decks versus cutting off two produces very different numbers of high-count hands. Check where the cut card goes first.
Shuffling: counting is pointless against a continuous shuffling machine (CSM). An automatic shuffler that shuffles whole shoes is fine.
Players: fewer players means more rounds per hour and more hands at a high count, though a big bet spread heads-up is easy to notice.
Mid-shoe entry: tables marked "No mid-shoe entry" stop you back-counting (wonging) — watching from behind and sitting down only when the count rises. This site's sit-out limits (up to 3 in a row, 6 in the last 10 rounds) reflect that kind of table.
Limits: if the minimum bet is too large for your bankroll, there is no room to raise your bets.
Picking a seat
Third base (last to act): you see the most cards before your own decision, which helps index plays. On this site it is seat 6.
First base (first to act): you see fewer cards before deciding, but you can count everyone else's hands calmly.
Middle seats: a natural view of the whole table and the tray. Some players feel they are less conspicuous than the ends.
"The bad player took the dealer's bust card" is a myth
However other players play, the probability of the next card does not change. The only differences between seats are how many cards you see and how comfortable you are.
Camouflage: staying under the radar
The main thing casinos look for is bet size that moves with the count: dropping straight to the minimum right after a shuffle, or multiplying the bet the moment the count rises. Players who are spotted may face early shuffles, flat-betting restrictions, being told they can no longer play blackjack (a back-off), or being barred.
How your bets look
Raise gradually: rather than jumping from 1 unit to 8, step up in a way that looks like riding a winning streak.
Do not slam back to the minimum after the shuffle: "up and down" betting starts each shoe at a middling bet and moves both ways with the count. It costs a little edge but draws much less attention.
Let winnings ride: leaving a win on the table for the next bet looks like perfectly ordinary play.
Cost-free camouflage
Look like you are there for fun: chat with the dealer and other players, tip occasionally
Do not stare at the cards or keep checking the discard tray
Do not stay too long at one table. Keep sessions to about 45–60 minutes and avoid the same shift and staff time after time
Camouflage that costs you
Skipping eye-catching index plays such as splitting tens when your bet is small
"Cover plays" that deliberately break basic strategy cut directly into your edge; use too many and there is no point counting
Good to know
Counting cards in your head is not illegal in most places. Casinos are private property, however, and may refuse your play or ask you to leave. If asked, comply politely.
Using calculators, phone apps or signalling devices is illegal or plain cheating in most jurisdictions.
The edge from counting is small and you can lose heavily in the short run. Never bet money you need to live on.

K♠5♥3♣9♦A♠6♥2♣10♦

6덱이면 A는 24장.

Hi-Opt I/II, Omega II: A를 0으로 두어 플레이 판단의 정확도를 높이는 방식입니다.
Wong Halves: 0.5
