Beside every baccarat table stands an electronic scoreboard recording the results of the current shoe. These records are the roads, or roadmaps (路單 in Chinese). Macau tables also provide scorecards and pins, and many players keep their own record as they bet.
There are five roads. The Bead Plate and the Big Road record the results directly; the Big Eye Boy, Small Road and Cockroach Pig (together, the "derived roads") read patterns from the shape of the Big Road. Let us go through them in turn.
Try the roadmap tool
"Random shoe" deals a whole eight-deck shoe so you can see a complete set of roads. Your record is saved in this browser.
Bead Plate (珠盤路)
One bead per coup, placed in order from top to bottom, then column by column from left to right. Each column holds six.
Red = Banker, blue = Player, green = Tie. The beads are marked "B, P, T" or "莊, 閒, 和".
A coup with a pair gets a small dot: red at the top left for a Banker pair, blue at the bottom right for a Player pair (the position varies between scoreboards).
The Bead Plate tells you what came up and how often. To read the flow of the shoe you use the Big Road.
Big Road (大路)
The star of the scoreboard. While the same side keeps winning, go down; when the winner changes, move to the next column and carry on with hollow circles.
Red circle = Banker, blue circle = Player.
Ties do not get a column. A green slash goes through the previous circle, with a number if there are two or more.
When a streak runs longer than six rows, it turns right along the bottom row. This is the "dragon's tail".
Pairs are shown with small dots, as on the Bead Plate.
The Big Road shows at a glance how long each side has run and in what rhythm the winners alternate.
Drawing the Big Eye Boy, Small Road and Cockroach Pig
These three do not record Banker or Player. They record whether the Big Road is following a pattern. Red means "regular", blue means "the pattern broke". Neither colour means Banker or Player, win or lose.
The only difference between the three is how far back they look along the Big Road: the Big Eye Boy compares with the column one back, the Small Road two back, the Cockroach Pig three back. Every time a mark is added to the Big Road, each derived road gets one red or blue by these rules.
When a new column starts (first row)
Compare the column just finished with the column one further back (two for the Small Road, three for the Cockroach Pig). Same length: red. Different: blue.
When the column continues (second row onwards)
Look at the column one back (two back for the Small Road, three for the Cockroach Pig), on the same row.
It has a mark on that row → red (that column also reached this far)
That row is empty but the row above has a mark → blue (that column ended exactly one row above)
Both that row and the row above are empty → red (that column ended earlier, and this one keeps running)
Where each road starts
A road cannot be drawn until there is a column to compare with. The Big Eye Boy starts at the Big Road's second column, second row (or third column, first row); the Small Road at the third column, second row (or fourth column, first row); the Cockroach Pig at the fourth column, second row (or fifth column, first row).
The reds and blues are laid out like the Big Road: the same colour goes down, a change of colour moves to the next column. The Big Eye Boy is usually drawn with hollow circles, the Small Road with solid dots and the Cockroach Pig with slashes.
The ask road: seeing the next colour first
Most scoreboards include an ask road (問路), which shows in advance which colour each derived road would get "if Banker comes next" and "if Player comes next". If it says all three would turn red on a Banker, a Banker win would continue the Big Road's pattern so far. The roadmap tool shows the ask road too.
Popular ways to read the roads
Everyone reads the roads their own way, but these are the names and ideas you will hear most at the table.
The streak (dragon,
One side winning again and again. A long one is called a dragon. Some players ride it ("follow the dragon"), others bet that it is about to break, and the table splits right down the middle.
The chop (單跳)
Banker and Player taking turns one at a time. On the Big Road, a row of one-mark columns.
Double chop (雙跳)
Alternating two at a time, giving neat columns of two.
One hall, two rooms
One side wins once, the other twice, and the rhythm repeats.
Reading the derived roads' colours
Lots of red on the derived roads says the Big Road is moving regularly; lots of blue says it is erratic. Betting on the side for which all three ask roads show the same colour is one of the classic uses.
Watching the ratio
Some players back whichever side has come up more often in the shoe; others bet on the side that has fallen behind, expecting it to "catch up".
The honest truth about roads and probability
The roads are a record of the past, not a forecast. In an eight-deck shoe the cards already dealt shift the odds of the next coup only very slightly, and no way of reading the roads changes the house edge on Banker or Player.
Even so, the roads are hard to give up because chance produces "trends" surprisingly often. Simulating shoes of about 78 coups on this site, a streak of six or more appeared in about 68% of shoes, eight or more in about 23%, and even ten or more in about 6%. Long streaks are nothing unusual.
Living with the roads
Treat the roads as a way to give your betting a rhythm and to share the excitement with the table. Do not raise your stakes because "it has to come this time"; enjoy them within a budget you set in advance.
